US President Donald Trump has expressed confidence that the United States and India will soon finalize a trade agreement, describing Prime Minister Narendra Modi as a close friend and highlighting the strong relationship between the two nations.

Speaking to reporters at the White House, Trump said he believes ongoing trade negotiations between Washington and New Delhi will lead to a successful deal. “We will get to a deal because I like your prime minister a lot. He is a good friend of mine, and we get along well. We have a good relationship,” Trump remarked.
His comments come just days after the US administration announced plans to impose an additional 12.5 per cent tariff on goods imported from India and 53 other countries. The proposed measure is linked to concerns that these nations have not done enough to prevent the use of forced labour in supply chains.
Addressing questions about the ongoing trade talks, Trump reiterated his long-standing criticism of India’s tariff policies. He alleged that India had benefited from trade arrangements with the United States for many years while imposing high duties on American products.
“For years, India took advantage of the United States. They charged us tremendous tariffs and paid nothing. Now it is the exact reverse, and we are making a lot of money with India,” Trump said.
Despite the tariff dispute, Trump’s remarks indicate optimism on both sides regarding a potential trade agreement that could further strengthen economic ties between the two countries. Trade negotiations between India and the United States have remained a key focus area, with both governments seeking to expand market access and deepen bilateral commerce.
No official timeline for the conclusion of the trade deal has been announced, but discussions between the two countries are expected to continue in the coming weeks.
