Veteran tiatrist Titta Preto dies at 93

Veteran tiatrist Tito Mathias Estaphania Pretto, pop ularly known as Titta Preto, passed away on Tuesday, bringing the cur tains down on one of the most illus trious careers in Konkani theatre. Born in Aldo na on January 4, 1933, Titta Preto dedicat ed nearly sev en decades to the tiatr stage and was widely regarded as one of the finest actors and comedians in Konkani theatre. He began his the atrical journey in Mumbai at the age of 15 and went on to feature in thou sands of tiatrs staged across Goa, Mumbai and overseas.

Known for his impeccable comic timing and versatile performanc es, he acted in several acclaimed productions, including Chikott Ani Pankott, Atanchim Kazaram, Pai Tum Chol Ghara, Mogak Lagon, Disgras and Kirmidoracho Xevott. He also appeared in Konkani films such as Nirmonn and Amchem Noxib. In recognition of his immense contribution to tiatr, he was conferred the Lifetime Contribution to Tiatr Award by the Tiatr Academy Goa in 2009.

Tributes poured in from artistes, cultural organisations and admirers across Goa and Mumbai, who remembered him as a dedicated performer and a towering figure of Konkani theatre. The funeral service will be held at St Michael’s Church, Mahim (West), Mumbai, today, June 11 at 4.30 pm.
