One year after surviving the devastating Air India Flight 171 crash, Viswashkumar Ramesh has spoken about the lasting impact the tragedy has had on his life. The London-bound flight crashed shortly after take-off from Ahmedabad on June 12, 2025, killing 260 people. Ramesh was the sole survivor of the accident.
Images of the 39-year-old walking away from the wreckage with visible injuries quickly spread around the world, symbolising a miraculous escape. However, Ramesh says surviving the crash was only the beginning of a much tougher journey.

Speaking on the first anniversary of the disaster, he revealed that he continues to struggle with anxiety, sleep problems and painful memories. He said many people focus on the fact that he survived but do not understand the emotional and physical challenges he faces every day.
The crash also claimed the life of his brother Ajay, who was travelling with him. Ramesh, who lives in Leicester in the United Kingdom, described the tragedy as a life-changing event that continues to affect him deeply.
According to reports, he is receiving support while exploring legal options through UK-based Hudgell Solicitors. The firm is assessing potential civil claims related to the disaster. Discussions are also ongoing with Air India regarding rehabilitation and support for his recovery.
Community leader Sanjiv Patel, who has supported the family since the accident, said Ramesh remains severely traumatised and often requires assistance even for routine activities. He added that the emotional scars of the crash are likely to remain for a long time.
Ramesh met investigators earlier this year as authorities continue to examine the circumstances surrounding the crash. While grateful to have survived, he says rebuilding his life has proven to be an enormous challenge, one that continues a year after the tragedy.
