India has secured the fifth position globally for Future of Work readiness in the QS World Future Skills Index 2027, highlighting the country’s strong potential to benefit from the rapidly evolving global job market. However, the report also underscores a major challenge, ranking India 18th in Skills Alignment, indicating a widening gap between employer expectations and the capabilities of graduates entering the workforce.
The report suggests that while India is creating significant opportunities for economic growth and employment, its higher education system must do more to equip students with industry-relevant skills needed in the modern workplace.

According to the QS World Future Skills Index 2027, the rapid adoption of artificial intelligence (AI) is reshaping labour markets faster than universities can update their academic curricula. Employers are increasingly seeking candidates with a combination of technical expertise in AI, digital technologies, and green skills, along with essential human skills such as communication, critical thinking, and problem-solving.
The report notes that higher education institutions worldwide are struggling to keep pace with these evolving workforce demands, but the challenge is particularly significant for India due to the size of its higher education system and its large young workforce.
QS described India as one of the world’s biggest opportunities for higher education, stating that the country’s success in bridging the skills gap will not only determine its own economic future but also influence the global supply of skilled professionals.
The findings highlight the urgent need for stronger collaboration between educational institutions, industry, and policymakers to ensure graduates are equipped with the skills required in an AI-driven and technology-focused economy.
