Rapper and singer Honey Singh has revealed that gajar ka halwa is the one Indian dessert he can never turn down. During a rapid-fire session on AB Talks, the musician named the traditional winter delicacy as his favourite sweet, bringing renewed attention to one of India’s most cherished desserts.
Made primarily with fresh carrots, milk, ghee and sugar, gajar ka halwa has been a household favourite for generations. Historians believe the dessert traces its roots to the Mughal era, while the orange carrots used in the recipe were introduced to the Indian subcontinent centuries ago through Punjab. Traditionally, families slow-cooked grated carrots with milk over several hours until the mixture thickened into a rich, aromatic dessert. Today, many home cooks use khoya or condensed milk to prepare it more quickly.
Nutrition experts say that while carrots provide fibre, vitamins and minerals, gajar ka halwa should still be enjoyed in moderation because of its high sugar and calorie content. A half-cup serving is generally considered sufficient for healthy adults. Eating larger portions regularly may contribute to excess calorie intake and weight gain.
For people with diabetes, experts recommend enjoying the dessert only occasionally and in small quantities if blood sugar levels are under control. They also suggest reducing added sugar, using low-fat milk, limiting the amount of ghee and incorporating nuts such as almonds or walnuts for healthier fats and improved satiety.
Preparing gajar ka halwa at home is relatively simple. Grated carrots are first sautéed in ghee before sugar and milk are added. The mixture is then simmered until the milk is fully absorbed and the carrots become soft. Cardamom and raisins are mixed in for flavour, while brown sugar can be added for extra sweetness if desired. Finally, the dessert is garnished with chopped pistachios, giving it a delicious crunch.
Whether enjoyed during winter or on festive occasions, gajar ka halwa continues to remain one of India’s most loved traditional desserts—and one that even Honey Singh finds impossible to resist.
