An oil tanker caught fire after being struck by an “unknown projectile” off the coast of Oman near the strategically important Strait of Hormuz on Monday, according to the United Kingdom Maritime Trade Operations (UKMTO).
In a statement, the British maritime security agency said the southbound tanker was hit on its port side, triggering a fire onboard.

“A tanker has reported being hit by an unknown projectile on the port side causing a fire, whilst travelling southbound,” the UKMTO said.
The agency confirmed that no casualties were reported and there was no immediate indication of any environmental damage resulting from the incident.
Authorities are monitoring the situation as investigations continue to determine the nature and source of the projectile. The incident has raised fresh security concerns in the Strait of Hormuz, one of the world’s busiest and most strategically significant maritime trade routes.
