State-owned Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited (BSNL) has introduced a new satellite phone designed for use in remote and challenging environments where conventional mobile networks are unavailable. The company announced the launch on social media platform X, highlighting the device as a reliable communication solution for defence personnel, maritime operations, disaster response teams, mining activities and adventure travel.
According to BSNL, the satellite phone ensures connectivity even in areas beyond the reach of cellular towers. Key features include satellite connectivity, voice calling from remote locations, emergency support and long battery life. The device is priced at ₹1,34,166, inclusive of all applicable taxes.

The satellite phone is primarily intended for authorised users such as defence and security personnel, maritime workers, disaster management teams and professionals operating in remote off-grid locations. BSNL has advised interested users to contact their nearest BSNL office or the company’s dedicated representative line to understand the authorisation process and eligibility requirements before purchasing the device.
Despite the launch, satellite phone usage remains heavily regulated in India due to national security concerns. Under the Telecommunications Act, 2023, satellite phones cannot be legally operated without prior approval or a No Objection Certificate (NOC) from the Department of Telecommunications (DoT).
Authorities maintain strict controls because satellite phones bypass conventional telecom infrastructure, making communications difficult for law enforcement and intelligence agencies to monitor. Security measures were significantly tightened following the 2008 Mumbai terror attacks, during which terrorists used satellite phones to communicate with handlers in Pakistan.
Foreign nationals bringing satellite phones into India are also required to declare the devices at customs. Failure to comply can result in penalties, confiscation of the device or legal action.
With the new launch, BSNL aims to provide a secure communication solution for specialised sectors while operating within India’s stringent regulatory framework governing satellite-based communication devices.
