Goa is set to roll out its au tomated traffic enforcement regime, with AI-powered camera penalties commencing on August 1. Transport Minister Mauvin Godin ho on Wednesday stressed that the government is currently using the system only to monitor violations and give motorists time to comply with traffic rules. Addressing reporters, Godinho said the government has deliberately postponed the imposition of fines to create awareness among road users before the enforcement begins. “We want discipline on the roads.
We have asked officials to identify the offences for which penalties will be imposed. Only certain traffic vio lations will attract fines,” he said. The minister emphasised that every vehicle must have valid third-party insurance, adding that enforcement measures, including fines for specific traffic offences, are essential to improve road discipline and reduce accidents. Godinho said the introduction of AI-based traffic en forcement is not optional, as it has been mandated by a Su preme Court-appointed committee monitoring road safety across the country. “The Supreme Court-mandated committee has made it clear that Goa, being a small State, should become the best State in implementing the Central Motor Vehicles Rules.

While acknowledging concerns over the new en forcement system, the minister said the government has deferred the issuance of AI camera-generated fines to pro vide motorists with an opportunity to familiarise them selves with the rules and ensure compliance. Despite Goa’s relatively small geographical size, road ac cidents have been increasing, Godinho noted, underscoring the need for stricter enforcement and greater adherence to traffic regulations. The Transport Department is expected to notify the list of traffic violations that will attract penalties under the AI based enforcement system before the August 1 rollout.
