Could Hardik Pandya Leave MI? CSK Among Franchises Monitoring Trade Situation

Hardik Pandya could emerge as the biggest name in the Indian Premier League (IPL) trade market ahead of the 2027 season, with Mumbai Indians (MI) reportedly evaluating major changes after their longest title drought in the tournament’s history.

Although no trade discussions have been officially confirmed, speculation surrounding the India all-rounder’s future has intensified even before the conclusion of IPL 2026. Chennai Super Kings (CSK) has reportedly emerged as one of the frontrunners should Pandya become available, while Rajasthan Royals (RR), Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR), and Delhi Capitals (DC) are also believed to be monitoring the situation closely.

The growing buzz comes after three contrasting seasons for Mumbai Indians. Following a disappointing 2024 campaign, the five-time IPL champions bounced back to qualify for the playoffs in 2025. However, another underwhelming performance in 2026 has prompted the franchise to undertake a comprehensive review of its cricketing operations.

Responding to reports linking Pandya with a potential exit, a Mumbai Indians spokesperson clarified that the franchise has not initiated any trade discussions.

“Our post-season review is currently on and we are looking into all aspects of the team. Contrary to reports, we are not engaged in conversations with regard to player trades; the same is only possible once the review is complete,” the spokesperson told Sportstar.

The franchise added that multiple ideas and options are being evaluated before any decisions are taken.

The ongoing assessment reportedly extends beyond the playing squad. Sources indicate that Mumbai Indians are reviewing their leadership structure, coaching staff and overall cricket operations as they seek to rebuild a side that has struggled to consistently compete for the IPL title in recent seasons.

Despite the speculation, Pandya’s departure is far from certain. Recent reports suggesting that he has parted ways with Mumbai Indians’ talent management arm have fuelled rumours of a possible exit, but insiders maintain that this should not be interpreted as a complete break from the franchise.

Historically, Mumbai Indians have built their success around a stable core group of players, retaining key stars over long periods rather than making frequent high-profile changes. The franchise is also widely regarded as one of the strongest player-management ecosystems in Indian cricket, making any decision involving its captain a complicated one.

The IPL trade market itself is still in its early phase, with most franchises conducting post-season evaluations before finalising retention and transfer strategies. As a result, multiple scenarios involving leading players are expected to surface in the coming weeks.

Whether Hardik Pandya eventually leaves Mumbai Indians or remains with the franchise, the current speculation highlights that significant changes could be on the horizon. Mumbai appears unlikely to enter IPL 2027 with the same core group that has represented the team over the past three seasons.

If Pandya does move to another franchise, it would not only reshape the balance of power in the IPL but could also become the defining trade of the 2027 window, given his stature as one of India’s premier all-rounders and a proven title-winning leader.
