The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has predicted an intensification of monsoon activity over northeast India and the foothills of the central and eastern Himalayas during the next four to five days. The weather agency has also issued flash flood warnings for several northern hill states and parts of southern India, urging residents in vulnerable regions to remain cautious.
According to the IMD, isolated heavy to very heavy rainfall is expected across the Northeast for the next five days. States including Arunachal Pradesh, Assam, Meghalaya, Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram and Tripura are likely to witness widespread rainfall through the week. Arunachal Pradesh is expected to receive particularly widespread showers on August 5, while Assam and Meghalaya could experience sustained rainfall between August 3 and 5.

The IMD has warned of a low to moderate risk of flash floods in Himachal Pradesh, Jammu and Kashmir, Ladakh and Uttarakhand over the next 24 hours. Saturated soil conditions could trigger surface runoff, inundation in low-lying areas and localised flooding. Similar alerts have been issued for Kerala and coastal and south interior Karnataka, where continued rainfall may result in waterlogging and flash floods.
While rainfall is expected to intensify in the north and northeast, monsoon activity is likely to ease across much of south peninsular India. However, coastal and south interior Karnataka may continue to receive isolated heavy to very heavy showers over the next two days.
