India ended the Commonwealth Games 2026 in fourth place with 39 medals. Despite a reduced 10-sport programme and the absence of key medal-winning disciplines, the country’s performance reflected resilience and adaptability.
India wrapped up its campaign at the Commonwealth Games 2026 in Glasgow with a total of 39 medals, comprising 13 gold, 17 silver and nine bronze. While the tally marked the country’s first finish below the 50-medal mark since the 1998 Kuala Lumpur Games, the numbers alone do not fully reflect the significance of the achievement.
The Glasgow edition presented unique challenges after organisers significantly reduced the Games programme because of financial constraints. Unlike the 19 sports featured at the Birmingham Commonwealth Games in 2022, the 2026 edition included only 10 sports, drastically limiting medal opportunities for participating nations.
Despite the curtailed programme, India secured an impressive fourth-place finish in the overall medal standings, highlighting the contingent’s ability to adapt and perform under challenging circumstances.
The reduced schedule also meant the exclusion of several sports that have traditionally contributed heavily to India’s Commonwealth Games success. Medal-rich disciplines such as shooting, wrestling, badminton, table tennis and field hockey were omitted from the Glasgow Games.
Historically, these events have been among India’s strongest performers, contributing 135 medals in shooting, 114 in wrestling, 31 in badminton, 28 in table tennis and six in field hockey across previous Commonwealth Games editions.
Given the absence of these major medal-winning sports, India’s 39-medal haul underscores the depth and resilience of its athletes. Rather than signalling a decline, the Glasgow campaign demonstrated India’s ability to remain competitive despite significantly fewer medal events, making its fourth-place finish one of the country’s most commendable performances in recent Commonwealth Games history.
