A 30-year-old man was allegedly beaten to death by his father in Pune following an argument over his demand to eat mutton at home during the holy month of Sawan, police officials said on Thursday.
The deceased has been identified as Mahesh Gaikwad, a resident of Pune.
According to police, the family had been abstaining from non-vegetarian food during Sawan. Many families across India avoid meat, eggs and fish during the month, which is considered sacred in several parts of the country.
The incident reportedly followed a heated argument after Mahesh told his family that he wanted to have mutton at home despite the family’s decision to avoid non-vegetarian food during the month.
The argument between Mahesh and his father subsequently turned violent, resulting in the fatal assault.
Police have begun investigating the circumstances surrounding the incident and are taking further action based on the findings.
