At least two people were killed and several others injured after a shooting at an apartment building in Minneapolis on Wednesday, officials said. The suspected shooter was also killed during an exchange of gunfire with police.
Minneapolis Police Interim Chief Bill Peterson said officers exchanged shots with the gunman as they entered the building to rescue residents and assist victims. Three police officers were injured, including two who suffered gunshot wounds.

Officials said the suspect, whose identity has not been released, was known to police. Peterson said authorities were familiar with the individual.
The shooting prompted residents to flee through the building’s corridors or shelter inside their apartments as officers responded to the scene. Police vehicles, armored units and ambulances surrounded the area as emergency teams worked to evacuate and treat those affected.
Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey praised the responding officers, saying their actions prevented the death toll from being significantly higher.
One victim died at the scene, while another succumbed to their injuries at a hospital, city officials said. Three other civilians who were shot were taken to hospital for treatment.
The incident occurred about five miles from Annunciation Catholic Church, where a shooting last year left two children dead and 27 others injured, according to officials. The latest violence has renewed concerns over the frequency of mass shootings in public and residential spaces across the United States.
