Panaji: Sanquelim has become the sixth rainfall monitoring station in Goa to record more than 2,000mm of cumulative rainfall during the ongoing monsoon season, even as the state as a whole continues to face a significant rainfall deficit, according to data from the India Meteorological Department (IMD).
Rainfall remained widespread across Goa in recent days, pushing Sanquelim past the 2,000mm mark. The station has now joined a group of locations that have received some of the highest rainfall totals in the state since the beginning of the monsoon.
The other five rain gauge stations that have already crossed 2,000mm are Valpoi, Dharbandora, Sanguem, Quepem and Canacona. Dharbandora and Valpoi have recorded particularly high rainfall totals, with 2,716.3mm and 2,707.3mm respectively. Sanguem has received 2,580.9mm, while Quepem recorded 2,388.1mm. Canacona has reported 2,046.2mm.
Despite these substantial figures at individual stations, Goa’s overall rainfall remains considerably below its seasonal average. Between June 1 and September 4, the state’s area-weighted rainfall was recorded at 1,935.7mm, compared with the normal rainfall of 2,750.3mm for the corresponding period.
This represents a rainfall deficit of nearly 30% for the state.
The difference between rainfall recorded at individual stations and Goa’s overall area-weighted figure highlights the uneven distribution of monsoon rain across the state. While several locations have experienced intense or frequent spells of rain, the cumulative rainfall across Goa has not yet reached its normal level for this stage of the season.
Another rainfall benchmark has also been reached at three locations. Dharbandora, Valpoi and Sanguem have each crossed the 100-inch rainfall milestone. Since 100 inches is equivalent to 2,540mm, these three stations have emerged as the wettest locations in the state based on the cumulative figures reported so far.
The latest rainfall data comes as Goa continues through the later phase of the southwest monsoon. The performance of the monsoon during the remaining weeks will determine whether the state can reduce the current deficit before the season officially concludes.
The IMD’s rainfall monitoring network tracks precipitation at several locations across Goa, providing station-level measurements as well as an overall area-weighted assessment. The latter offers a broader picture of rainfall received across the state and can differ substantially from totals recorded at individual rain gauges.
For now, the contrasting figures underline Goa’s uneven monsoon pattern this year: some stations have already crossed 2,000mm, with three exceeding 100 inches, while the state-wide rainfall total remains about 30% below normal.
