Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has warned that the war with Russia currently appears likely to continue into the winter, despite renewed diplomatic efforts by the United States to broker an end to the conflict.
Zelensky made the remarks after holding talks in Kyiv with US envoys Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner on Sunday. The meeting was part of Washington’s latest effort to revive negotiations between Russia and Ukraine.

Both Zelensky and Witkoff described the discussions positively, but no breakthrough or agreement to end the war was announced. The US envoys had travelled to Kyiv a day after meeting Russian President Vladimir Putin in Moscow.
The visit marked Witkoff and Kushner’s first trip to the Ukrainian capital since the full-scale Russian invasion began in February 2022. Their discussions with Zelensky covered efforts to advance peace negotiations, as well as Ukraine’s security and support requirements ahead of the winter.
Zelensky has expressed a desire to resume trilateral negotiations involving Ukraine, Russia and the United States. Meanwhile, US officials said they remained hopeful that fresh talks could be arranged soon, although significant differences between Moscow and Kyiv remain.
The latest diplomatic push comes as fighting continues, with both sides carrying out attacks despite renewed international efforts to find a negotiated settlement.
