GUWAHATI: The male friend of a 22-year-old student who was found dead at a homestay in Guwahati last week has been remanded to eight days of police custody as investigators probe the circumstances surrounding her death.
Asik Ali, who was arrested after the woman was found dead at the homestay on Saturday, had reportedly told police that she had died by suicide. However, investigators have questioned his account and are examining the circumstances that preceded her death.

The homestay’s owner, caretaker and other staff members have also been detained for questioning as part of the investigation.
According to Ali’s family, he had been in a relationship with the woman for several years. His mother said the woman had visited their home during Eid and that the family had initially opposed their interfaith relationship.
“If my son is guilty, he should be punished,” she said.
Ali’s father said his son had taken the woman to a hospital with the assistance of security personnel following the incident.
Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said the investigation would examine all available evidence, including digital records and statements from both families.
“The investigation into the incident is underway, and those responsible will be punished,” Sarma said. He added that investigators would examine information including Facebook activity and phone records, besides recording the statements of the parents of both individuals.
The investigation is continuing, with police examining the sequence of events leading up to the student’s death.
