PANAJI: Transport Minister Mauvin Godinho has urged youngsters to enjoy social gatherings responsibly by ensuring that at least one person in their group remains sober and takes responsibility for driving everyone home safely.
Speaking at a Road Safety Week programme, Godinho said driving after consuming excessive alcohol increases the risk of serious road accidents. He encouraged young people to adopt the practice of having a designated driver whenever they go out partying.

“I didn’t say don’t go for parties or don’t drink. But always include a non-drinker in your group,” Godinho said, stressing the importance of ensuring that someone in the group is fit to drive.
The Transport Minister also cautioned motorists against speeding, particularly on improved roads, bridges and flyovers. He said better road infrastructure should not encourage drivers to increase their speed, as faster driving can contribute to road accidents.
Godinho’s remarks were made as part of efforts to promote responsible driving and greater awareness of road safety among motorists and young people.
