Congress Appoints Hockey Legend Pargat Singh as New Punjab Unit Chief, Replacing Raja Warring

The Congress has appointed former India hockey captain and Jalandhar Cantonment MLA Pargat Singh as the new president of its Punjab unit, replacing Amarinder Singh Raja Warring.

Pargat Singh, a multi-term MLA, was named Punjab Pradesh Congress Committee (PPCC) chief on Friday, two days after Warring resigned from the post. His appointment maintains the party’s choice of a Jat Sikh leader for the state unit while seeking to address ongoing factional differences within the Punjab Congress.

A former full-back and captain of the Indian hockey team, Pargat Singh has been an active political figure in Punjab for several years. He is viewed as a relatively less confrontational leader within the faction opposing Warring.

The leadership change comes shortly after the Congress made another organisational change in Punjab. Last month, the party appointed Sachin Pilot as its new state in-charge, replacing Bhupesh Baghel. The move came amid reported differences between factions associated with Warring and former Punjab Chief Minister Charanjit Singh Channi.

Following Pargat Singh’s appointment, Warring congratulated his successor in a post on X, sharing a photograph of the two leaders together.

Channi also welcomed the decision and thanked Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge, Rahul Gandhi, Sachin Pilot and the party’s central leadership for appointing Pargat Singh as PPCC president.

The latest appointment marks another effort by the Congress leadership to reorganise its Punjab unit amid continuing internal differences.
