Former India cricketer Aakash Chopra has predicted that batting great Virat Kohli could end his international career with 98 centuries, just two short of Sachin Tendulkar’s record of 100 international hundreds.
Chopra’s prediction comes shortly after Kohli confirmed that the 2027 ODI World Cup will be his final major tournament for India. The former India captain has already retired from Test and T20I cricket.
Kohli, who will turn 38 next month, currently has 86 international centuries to his name, including a record 55 ODI hundreds. He reached the milestone during the first ODI against the West Indies in Thiruvananthapuram.
Speaking during an interaction with Cricinfo, Chopra was asked how many centuries he expected Kohli to score before bringing his international career to an end. He backed the star batter to finish with 98 hundreds.
Kohli’s latest century also helped him climb to second place in the ICC ODI batting rankings. His 55th ODI hundred lifted his rating to 796 points, putting him behind India teammate Shubman Gill.
Gill strengthened his position at the top of the rankings with a century in the same match and currently leads with 816 rating points.
The West Indies match also saw Kohli reach another major milestone as he crossed 15,000 runs in ODI cricket. He became only the second batter in history to achieve the landmark after Tendulkar.
Kohli has held second place on the all-time ODI run-scoring list since overtaking former Sri Lanka captain Kumar Sangakkara in October 2025. Sangakkara finished his ODI career with 14,243 runs.
Former Australia captain Ricky Ponting is fourth on the list with 13,704 ODI runs from 375 matches, while Sri Lankan great Sanath Jayasuriya occupies fifth place with 13,430 runs from 448 ODIs.
