Mumbai: The Bombay High court, on Wednesday passed an order ruling that the right to good roads is a fundamental right for citizens under the right to life. The High court also said that the state is obligated to provide good roads to citizens.
Maintain roads and keep them free from potholes
In the event of loss of life due to the violation of this right, citizens can seek compensation
Duty of municipal corporations to maintain and improve public streets, remove obstructions on streets and foothpaths, keep them levelled, free of potholes and properly surfaced
Officials who do not comply will have to face disciplinary action
Need for a dedicated website where citizens can launch complaints, track the status of their complaint and eventually get a solution
Need for proper technology to construct and maintain roads and to fill potholes is a must
After receiving permission to dig up roads, the agency’s name and duration of the work should be clearly mentioned on the site
All municipal corporations should provide citizens with a way of complaining about poor road conditions through e-mail and photos at designated centres, toll-free numbers, websites and SMS services all year long
