“There was a time when tourists and locals preferred not to visit these beaches due to strewn garbage. Beach cleanliness was needed and the same needs to improve,” said Shweta, a resident of Arambol.
When asked for her comments on the beach cleaning exercise, Arambol sarpanch Pranali Vaigankar said, “The workers during the cleanup exercise don’t dispose of the collected waste. They leave the waste, which the animals feast and litter all over again. We have sent a letter to the concerned authorities to take action on the issue but we haven’t received any response from them.”
Shubham, a resident of Morjim said, “The major reason why the beaches were polluted is that there was no proper garbage disposal mechanism. Now, that there are special workers and dustbins allotted; the change can be clearly seen. If the locals and tourists use the dustbin facility only then the beaches will remain clean.”
“The Government has engaged workers to keep the beaches clean. We have also appointed a local person who collects the waste from all the wards of the village which helps in keeping the village clean. During the season, the shack owners are given responsibility of cleaning their areas”, Querim sarpanch Yashwant Narvekar informed.
Morjim Sarpanch Serna said she personally visits the beach and see if it is clean or not. The workers clean the beach regularly.
