Sao Jose de Areal prevail over Davorlim

Win 5-3 via shootout after playing a goalless draw in the regulation time; St Anthony SC pip Goa Velha

MARGAO: Sao Jose de Areal Sports Club prevailed over Sporting Club of Davorlim 5-3  via the tie-breaker to storm into the semi-finals of the South Goa Mc Dowells’ No 1 Yaari Premiere Cup inter-village football tournament, organised by Cuncolim Union  at Government Village School ground, Cuncolim, on Wednesday.
There was no score at lemon break. 
Sao Jose de Areal Sports Club started the match with attacking intent. They built their attack with intent to disrupt the opposition rearguard. Agio Antao had a glorious chance to surge ahead when he unleashed a snap shot miss the mark narrowly. 
At the other end, Sporting Club of Davorlim took some time before they got into the groove.
Sporting Club of Daorlim were unlucky when attacking midfielder Parryson Rebello’s hot bloodied shot kissed the cross bar much to the dismay of Davorlim supporters.
Shortly after, Sao Jose de Areal’s Bersel Viegas missed a sitter as he failed to put his laces into the shot with only the Davorlim goalkeeper Ashikesh Shetty at his mercy in the 35th minute. 
Sporting Club of Davorlim came close to taking the lead in the 40th minute when Joel Colaco’s snap shot was well blocked by rival goalkeeper. Both the teams were unable to break and went without scoring at lemon break. 
When play resumed the momentum was clearly with Sao Jose de Areal. Bersel Viegas should have scored soon after resumption but his pot shot was saved by rival goalkeeper. Sao Jose de Areal, however couldn’t be denied for long. Bersel Viegas seizing on an assist from Haysten Dias headed into the far corner of the net.
Stung by that setback, Sporting Club of Davorlim regrouped quickly and took the fight to the rival camp and nearly fetched the equaliser, but Parryson Rebello’s try hit the cross bar. After that initial scare, Sao Jose de Areal had a chance to regain the lead but Raymond Fernandes blasted wide from handshaking distance. Sporting Club of Davorlim’s equalizer came in the 69th minute following a flag kick taken by Agnelo Colaco was nodded in by Venson Figureido. 
In the ensuing penalty shootout, Bersel Viegas, Agio Antao , Fredrick Endro and Joseph Monteiro were on target for Sao Jose de Areal Sports Club while Selwyn Miranda and Parryson Rebello found the mark for Davorlim. 
Bersel Viegas who played a stellar role for Sao Jose de Areal Sports Club was adjudged man of the match.
In another match at Anjuna ground, St Anthony’s Sports Club, Marna- Siolim beat Goa Velha SC 3-1 via tiebreaker to march into the semi-finals of North Goa.
There was no score at the end of the regulation time.
In the penalty shootout, Claudio Rodrigues, Pushparaj Mandrekar, Denver Menezes were on target for winners while only Suresh Thapa was on target for Goa Velha.
