MERCES: William Dias scored a brace to help Mesta Bhat down St Caitan B 2-1 in the second match of the 4thedition of Pogo Boys Cup, organised by Pobo Boys, Merces, at Merces ground, on Wednesday.
Mesta Bhat attacked from the first whistle and had the chance to score in the first minute through their skipper Joe Pires but St Caitan B goalkeeper Sydney was quick to parry the ball to safety.
Mesta Bhat came close to scoring again in the 2nd minute when Oduth’s freekick tipped over the cross bar.
Mesta Bhat scored the goal in the third minute through William Dias after he nodded in Myron Dias corner.
Mesta Bhat’s William tried desperately to score another goal but his shot went wide. Mesta Bhat enjoyed the lion’s share of ball possession in the first 10 minutes of the match.
Mesta Bhat’s Caitan had a go at the goal but his weak shot and was easily saved by St Caitan’s goalie Sydney.
St Caitan’s Aditya Vengalikar finally restored parity in the 15th minute after a brilliant solo effort and calmly placed the ball into the net making it 1-1.
At lemon break the score was 1-1.
Post resumption, both the sides looked determined to find the winner. Two minutes into the 2nd half William completed his brace and made it 2-1 with a lovely finish off his right foot after he received a lovely ball from Joe Pires from the left flank, keeper Sydney tried to keep the ball out but the short was to powerful.
Five minutes into the second half Mesta Bhat’ William went for glory and tried to score a long ranger despite having 2 other team mates free but his attempt ballooned over the post. Oduth Kalangutkar was the rock at the Mesta Bhat defence and managed to make several interceptions.
Mesta Bhat came close to scoring again but Myron headed the ball wide of the goal post.
St Caitan B’s Shibo More had a decent opportunity to score from a corner but he headed the ball over the goal post. The match ended in favour of Mesta Bhat 2-1.
