The once-pristine stream and water body in Cunchelim has turned into an environmental disaster, marred by rampant pollution and negligence. What was once a natural beauty has now become an unofficial garbage dump, primarily due to the activities of migrants living in large numbers around the area.
Clusters of colonies have mushroomed on communidade land, with many residents living in unsanitary conditions. Some of these encroachers have even rented out their premises, contributing to a growing floating population that has seemingly become a vote bank for politicians. Under the cover of darkness, waste is often dumped into the stream, causing immense pollution. Open defecation by hutment dwellers further exacerbates the situation.

The stream is littered with dead animals, plastic, broken glass, and other waste. Encroachment is also rampant, with structures built directly into the stream, intensifying the nuisance. Illegal hotels in the area have compounded the problem, using the stream as their dumping ground. The unbearable stench that permeates the air poses serious health risks to residents and visitors alike. During the monsoons, the pollutants from the stream are washed into the fields at Siolim, spreading the damage even further.
To address this pressing issue, authorities must step in to clean up the stream and surrounding areas immediately. Strict penalties should be imposed on those who dump waste or encroach upon the water body. Goa’s natural resources are precious and need to be protected for the well-being and prosperity of future generations. It is high time for decisive action to restore this water body to its former glory.
