District Magistrate issues directions to SGPDA and MMC

MARGAO: Taking cognisance of illegal activities in SGPDA’s wholesale fish market, District Magistrate, South, N D Agrawal, on Friday, issued directions to the SGPDA and the Margao Municipal Council to stop cleaning of fish in the wholesale fish market.
The Magistrate has asked the two authorities to file an action taken report on his directions at the next date of hearing of the case on July 10. The proceedings under section 133 of the Cr P C were initiated by the District Magistrate on a complaint by a resident of Madel, Savio Dias.
The directions were apparently issued after the Margao Municipal Council on Friday filed its submission in the case. In the submission, MMC stated that large scale unauthorized activities of fish cutting and cleaning in large quantities emit foul odour in the wholesale fish market. The submissions made by MMC Chief Officer Deepali Naik said that waste generated on account of these activities is disposed of in unscientific manner. “There’s also spillage of ice water mixed with fish serums on the ground and the same is not treated properly. It is also seen that decayed fish is found in the fields and in the vicinity of the market, which emit bad stench,” the MMC reply stated.
On the disposal of thermocol waste, the MMC said the civic body had in the past requested the SGPDA to take up the matter with fish dealers, wholesalers since the Council finds difficultly in disposing the waste.
While assuring full cooperation to the SGPDA to keep the market clean, the civic body drew attention of the District Magistrate the decision to deploy a market inspector to initiate action against illegal encroachments and illegal erection of banners and hoardings in and around the SGPDA markets.
