PANJIM: The Goa Pradesh Youth Congress Committee (GPYCC) has appealed to Governor P S Sreedharan Pillai to ask the government not to allow opening of casinos till the danger of predicted third wave of Coronavirus is over.

In a letter addressed to the Governor, the Youth Congress stated that under the pretext of economic revival, the government is trying to allow opening of casinos in River Mandovi but the Youth Congress members will vehemently oppose any such suicidal move taken by the government.
GPYC President Adv Varad Mardolkar has pointed out that upcoming Diwali and Christmas vacations and New Year celebrations may attract more crowd to casinos and Goa may again suffer due to fault of others and it could lead to spike in COVID-19 cases.
Adv Mardolkar stated that in the past casino operators violated Standard Operating Procedure (SOPs), which ultimately resulted in surge in COVID-19 cases in the State and medical fraternity suffered due to sudden increase in cases and more than 2000 people succumbed to the deadly virus.
“The Youth Congress is opposing restarting of off-shore casinos in River Mandovi so as to protect the river from pollution and to stop traffic menace in the city. Opening of casinos in the river will be an invitation to epidemic and can result in common disease,” Adv Mardolkar said.
