Goa bag bronze in National School Games girls under-17 football

Goa scored a grand double winning both the boys and girls baseball U-19 titles at National School Games which concluded at Nehru Stadium, Fatorda on Sunday.
In boys finals, Goa beat Delhi by 6-0 homes. Delhi had qualified after beating MP 5-0 homes.
In the hard-line finals, MP beat Vidya Bharati 3-0 homes.
In baseball girls, Goa beat Delhi by 6-0 homes. Earlier, MP beat Delhi 5-3 homes in the semi-finals. In the hard-line finals, Delhi beat Maharastra by 5-1 homes.
Manipur beat Jharkand 1-0 in under-17 girls football finals with Grace scoring the precious match-winner.
Goa beat Haryana 5-4 via the tie-breaker to win the bronze medal. Velania, Simone, Leena, Jeeny, Bethany scored for Goa. Sonia, Deepika, Munesh, Nirmala netted for Haryana.
Jharkhand nearly broke the deadlock against Manipur but striker Savitra Kumari spurned an easy chance with only the rival goalkeeper at her mercy.
After the wake up call, Manipur enjoyed better possession with star striker D Grace who was brilliant throughout repeatedly attacked the rival citadel but the Jharkhand defenders kept her under control with tight marking.
Crossing over, Manipur were determined to earn a victory and went all out in search of the match-winner which they earned through D Grace.
Host Goa came from behind to beat Haryana. Goa showed better understanding and coordination In the second session, it was Haryana who stunned Goa when Sonia Singh bulged the net. Stunned by the setback, Goa went into the attacking mode and created many forays and their efforts bore fruits when Velania Fernandes found success with a stiff shot.

Speaking as chief guest at the valedictory function, Chief Minister Digamber Kamat, called upon young footballers, baseball and chess players to take greater interest in sports and try to achieve laurels at National and international arena. He appreciated the dedicated efforts of the officers of the Department of Sports and Youth Affairs who ensured that all organizational aspects were taken care of.
Director of Sports and Youth Affairs, Dr. Susana de Sousa, delivered the welcome address. Gulshan Ara, Observer SGFI, complimented the organisers for the excellent organization.
The colourful cultural presentation by Amelia Group and Kanta Gaude enthralled the large number of spectators. The NSS volunteers of RMS HSS Margao added elegance to the ceremony.
S.K. Srivastava, Chief Secretary, Dr. M. Modassir, Secretary Sports and Youth Affairs, Ramakant Angle, president, Baseball Federation of India, Prashant Trivedi, Observer School Games Federation of India attended the ceremony. Also present were officials of DSYA and SAG Juliana Gurjao e Colaco, Dy. Director, R.N. Tari, asstt. director (sports), Anant Raut Desai, asstt. director (projects), B.S. Malaj, asstt. director PE) North, Laximan Naik, AAO, Nagesh Cascar, auditor.
