There is a hue and cry over the hanging of Yakub Memon in the country. The SC has done its job. And one has to respect its verdict. But there are many loopholes which I am trying to draw attention to. Firstly, the real culprit is Yakub’s brother Tiger Memon who is an ace smuggler and who is also a very ruthless man. He has been in hiding and the authorities still cannot get hold of him. Yakub Memon actually, according to news reports, surrendered himself.
More than 300 people of different walks of life have sent a petition to the President in connection with the hanging of Yakub Memon. From this one can point out that there is a general feeling that Yakub should not have been hanged and should have got only life imprisonment.
In our country when you cannot get the real culprit, the person closest to him is targeted. This happens because of public and media pressure. And this is the case with Yakub Memon. Yakub Memon, being a chartered account would definitely have the knowledge of what his brother was doing. But he lacked the courage to cross swords with his brother Tiger Memon. He also did things at Tiger’s behest. Hence he would not have lived to tell the tale.
Most people adversely affected by the bomb blasts and other such gory incidents that took place as a revenge for the demolition of the Babri Masjid, would like the conspirators to go unpunished. My family wasd also targeted in one of the incidents. My wife, four daughters and maid, escaped death by a whisker when the miscreants wanted to attack our car.
I too will be happy if the conspirators were hanged. Yet most affected people feel that Yakub and other conspirators should be hanged. It is known fact that another smuggler Dawood Ibrahim was allured to Pakistan by the ISI. He still holds the remote control to cause mayhem but only at the bidding of the ISI. If he fails to obey their command, he will be butchered. One hopes that good sense will prevail.
