2 picnickers drown in Arambol lake

A picnic came to a tragic end when two students of DMC College, Assagao, drowned in the Sweet Water Lake at Kolamb-Arambol on Tuesday at about 2.45 pm.
According to Pernem police, Ankit Sakhardande of Panjim and Yeshwant Thakur from Bandra-Mahrashtra, but residing at Warkhand-Pernem, along with 10 other friends had gone for a picnic at Arambol beach.
Police further informed that the group went to the Wag Kolamb Lake in the afternoon. Ankit and Yeshwant had entered the lake to retrieve a ball that had accidentally fallen in the water, when they began to struggle in the lake.
Their friends raised an alarm and locals rushed into the waters and pulled out the two victims. They were shifted to Primary Health Centre at Tuem, but they breathed their last on the way to the hospital.
Pernem police conducted the inquest and later sent the bodies to GMC Hospital at Bambolim for an autopsy.
Incidentally, around 10 youth have drowned in the in the 5-metre deep lake since the last two months.
Locals believe that the lake has been cursed by the devil and this has led to a number of drowning incidents in recent times. They have now demanded a ban on swimming at the lake and the erection of signboards warning about the dangers of swimming at the site.
