VASCO: A special review meeting to discuss pre-monsoon works in the port town was called by Vasco MLA Carlos Almeida in Deputy Collector’s Office on Monday.
The councillors complained about the incomplete pre-monsoon work and so a second review meeting was planned to be held on June 14.
Almeida stated that for past few years there was no major flooding issue in Vasco. Today I have taken a review meeting with the Water Resource Department officials and Mormugao Municipal Council (MMC), so whatever shortfalls are there, it will be solved within a week’s time.
“On June 14 once again we are going to conduct a review. We have low lying areas such as Maimolem, Orulem, Baina etc. So I have asked the councillors to focus on these areas and take up the cleaning work of drains as soon there will be also Saptah during monsoon season,” Almeida added.
Councillor Deepak Naik said that there was a need to put labour and undertake cleaning work at the low lying areas which have been neglected. “The panel which is in power is only undertaking work in their wards and the low lying areas which should be the top priority are being neglected,” he said.
He further said that some areas such as KTC Bus Stand, Police Quarters, and HQ Hotel are prone to water clogging, so these areas need to be taken up for pre-monsoon work which till now not been taken up.
Almeida has asked the Chief Officer MMC to complete the pending work within three days time.
Chief Officer MMC Agnelo Fernandes informed that from 25 wards, 1 to 12 wards have been given to an agency to look after the pre-monsoon works and 13 to 15 to another agency. In ward number 7,12, 20 and 22 work is pending. Each ward has been given 500 metres of work and each councillor will have to supervise and get his work done.
He further said that municipality will also clear the mud, silt next to drains so that school students should not suffer due to water clogging.
“I will also issue order to flying squads which will be functional all day so that in case of heavy rainfall and emergency the squad will attend immediately,” Fernandes added.
