MARGAO: Margao Municipal Council (MMC) commenced the work of clearing the multi-level parking space that had been turned into garbage dumping ground, soon after it was highlighted in Herald newspaper on May 25. The garbage is being transported to the Saligao garbage treatment plant.
Lyndon Pereira, Chairperson of MMC on Wednesday said around two to four trucks of dry waste dumped at proposed parking project space have been transported to Saligao.

“Yes, the site will get cleared very soon. The Goa State Pollution Control Board has already given MMC the permission to transport the dry waste to the treatment plant at Saligao, and we have begun the work from Wednesday,” said Pereira.
Reportedly, in the absence of waste dumping at Sonsoddo, the civic body is transporting all the dry waste at the space allotted for the proposed parking project, which is yet to see the light of the day. The dry waste over has piled up and is affecting the commercial activities for several months. Vendors and shop owners have also started complaining about the nuisance.
Pereira claimed shortage of space has forced MMC to dump the dry waste over here, but it is transported to the cement factory after the baling process is done.
“We will try to clear the site by transporting it to the Saligao plant, and baling will be done on the leftover waste. MMC is fully aware about the health issues, and hence will try to resolve the issue before monsoon,” said Lyndon.
Presently there are only two baling machines there and that too without shed. The capacity of these machines and the garbage coming in cannot be matched, and as a result it gets piled up day by day.
He said that the inert from the Sonsoddo dump yard is also getting cleared.
“MMC will make sure that maximum inert is used for the land filling before the arrival of monsoon. Thereafter the legacy dump will be covered with the trapolin by Goa Solid Waste Management Corporation,” he said.
