MARGAO: Calling for a more professional approach to the door-to-door collection of garbage, the high powered coordination committee (HPCC) on solid waste management held a meeting in Margao where the Margao Municipal Council (MMC) was directed to outsource garbage collection by June 1.
Margao MLA Digambar Kamat and Fatorda MLA Vijai Sardesai said that the objective of the door-to-door collection drive was not being achieved and hence it was important to issue a tender quickly for outsourcing.
“There have been a lot of complaints regarding the garbage collection and thus outsourcing at the earliest is important,” Kamat said.
“We had recommended this a year-and-half back. That time they said there is no data. But now with the current system they definitely have the data. I appreciate the stand taken by MMC chairperson Arthur D’Silva and hope to see action on the ground soon,” Sardesai said.
D’Silva who was present at the meeting assured that they act on the matter immediately. Sardesai added that the first right of choice should be given to Fomento Green that is already running the garbage treatment plant for which the segregation at source via door-to-door garbage collection is important.
Kamat also hoped that Fomento Green would start work on the landfill site by October and added that they had received the necessary permissions from the Town and Country Planning Department (TCP). Fomento Green CEO Shridhar Kamat was present for the meeting while MMC chief officer Naveen S L was absent.
Kamat also called on the government to provide immediate funding to cap the existing garbage dump at Sonsodo. Sardesai added that the government did not appear to be serious on the matter given that the HPCC had already recommended the same at their last meeting in January 2013.
