MPT’s Pandiyan to relinquish charge today

PANJIM: P Mara Pandiyan, IAS, chairman of Mormugao Port Trust (MPT) will relinquish charge on Thursday after remaining at the helm of MPT for about three and a half years, to take his next assignment with the Government of Kerala as Additional Chief Secretary.

A 1984 batch IAS Officer of the Kerala cadre, Pandiyan term as chairman was probably one of the most difficult periods in the history of Mormugao Port because the Port was staring at bankruptcy with bulk of its income disappearing on account of the ban imposed on export of iron ore.  90% of MPT’s income was generated through iron ore exports.
Pandiyan’s biggest challenge was to engineer a turn around to prevent the port from sinking.
The general cargo traffic has shown a growth of about 30% so far compared to the previous year with the highest growth rate achieved by MPT among all major ports.
He has initiated various measures to eradicate pollution and one such measure is the introduction of silos for coal loading coupled with a rapid wagon in motion facility.
Another of his achievement is the commissioning of cruise berth to promote cruise tourism in Goa. Another of his innovative idea is establishing a dry Port at Belgaum to promote container traffic.
