PANJIM: A change in the mentality towards the management of garbage could result in rich pickings for those companies involved in that business. Given the general mentality of not in my backyard means that it is a battle.
Detritus Solutions based in Mapusa hopes to make the state green and provide better environmental solutions in the state.
Goa, has its vision towards a Green, Clean and better Environment solutions. He said “ It is a tough grind and we spend a great deal of our time educating people in schools and other platforms so that people understand how important it is especially in a state like Goa which is so dependent now on tourism.”
Gaurav Pokle, Managing Director of the company felt that the state had to learn from other countries as well as initiatives being undertaken around the country.
He said “One has to only look at places like Ibiza where tourism is such an important part of the local economy. Thousands of people visit and every day if you walk around like I did in the night it is dirty. However at a fixed time in the night the truck comes and cleans everything up. Then at 3 or 4 in the morning a truck will come with water and clean the roads. Next morning when one walks through it is clean again unlike in Goa where garbage stays.”
The company provides services as diverse as the collection, transfer, recycling, and disposal with special purpose vehicle, storage and cleaning equipment, waste-water treatment solutions, rain water harvesting solutions, pioneering latest technologies in design, standardizations and implementation of waste to energy or waste to recycle plants.
The company works with the 7 municipalities in Goa for their Municipal solid waste plant. The company help erect the plant and landfills as per the norms of pollution control board with use of Geo textile, Geo Clay liner and HDPE liner.
The company had a turnover of approximately between Rs 2 and 2.5 crore and Gaurav hopes business will boom once Goans start accepting the importance and the responsibility of garbage management.
The acceptance of technology he said was always difficult given that people in Goa he said always came prepared for meetings with the negative points of that technology rather than the benefits of it.
The state he said generated 450 tonnes of garbage every day which was minuscule when compared to the 2 to 3000 tonnes by Pune and 6000 tonnes by Mumbai. These cities were open to technology and ideas when it came to handling garbage and this state would have to do the same.
