The marathoner bakes on

Partner in Carasid, Christabel Shrivastava began as a food vendor for Cafe Coffee Day in Goa. In 2008, Carasid (named after their kids Cara and Sidhant) which specialises in bakery and confectionery products was established and now has four large outlets in Goa. VIKANT SAHAY visited her outlet at Miramar to check what’s baking

She is a magician with cakes and pastries. She spends most of her free time in experimenting new recepies for the benefit of the sweet tooth. A marathon runner who enjoys taking part in various running events in India and sometimes even abroad, Christabel burns her “sweet” calories while running for at least four days a week, if not more. Her free time is utilised basically in developing new kinds of recepies and experimenting first at home. She loves spending time with the family and friends on the dining table.
Goa is a 365-days vacation spot as many say. “We do not go to the beaches as others do. We go to the interiors for running and we have our group. We do it for at least four days a week and on Sundays, we take the long stretch as I run for 12 kilometers while Sunil tries for his 21 kilometer stretch,” said Christabel.
She loves watching television serials whenever she gets time, mostly recorded. “Yes that’s my Me Time. I love watching serials which has investigative and analysing crime stories like Criminal Minds, Stalker etc. These are thrilling and I love watching those,” added Christabel. She also is addicted to all the foodie channels on the idiot box and while watching learns the new trends in the market.
Ocassionally, she does go out driving with family about twice a week, which includes husband Sunil, son Sidhant and daughter Cara.
A graduate in nutrition, she recalls her early days in Mumbai in 1998 when she started working from home. “The kids were small so I started baking. Sunil used to travel to Belgium and he came back with brownies which we never knew about in India. I experimented and made these brownies which was liked by our friend who owned a restaurant and the supply chain with Kobe Sizzlers in Mumbai began.” This had a snowballing effect in various restaurants, including Delhi Durbar in Mumbai. “During the Christmas time we got an order of making 266 kilograms of brownies. We had no support. The entire family got in to make it at home and we did it to the liking of everyone within three days as it had shelf life. And, yes we never had any help or maid,” said Christabel.
She loved her trip to Malaysia with the entire family but has her dream to travel to Austria to taste the coffee and pastry in the bylanes of Vienna.
