With a series of hits like the ever
iconic ‘Red Red Wine’, and their covers of songs like ‘Can’t Help Falling in
Love’ by Elvis Presley and ‘Light My Fire’ by The Doors, UB40 has a fair
following in Goa. However, those are the songs that most people are truly
acquainted with. In the run up to the concert that is set to unfold at Gigi’s
in Mobor on April 24, one fun question to ponder over, is, what is the one
obscure UB40 song that people absolutely must listen to? What is that song that
defines the typical UB40 song that is none of the above?
Café asks a few bass players, who are an
integral part of the reggae groove, and gets their take on the matter:
For me, it would have to be ‘Rat in mi
Kitchen’. I think that for a live gig, they would absolutely kill it. Also… well…
bass players really love that groove.

Everyone knows UB40 as a reggae band,
but they also had a jazz angle to their music. Their song, ‘Rat in mi Kitchen’
was very popular on jazz radio in the ‘80s. Incidentally, an ex-member of UB40,
trumpet player Graeme Hamilton, performed a few times with my band, Jazz
Junction.

For me, I would have to definitely go with ‘Higher Ground’ or the band’s cover of ‘Homely Girl’. But on the more obscure side of things, I’d have to say ‘Rat in mi Kitchen’.
