Pay parking is maybe a good initiative. But, I think it will only
make Goans happy if proper arrangements for parking are not made. Right now
everything is completely messed up, and the reason there is double parking is
because of improper management. Even today, we went out to shop and tried
parked in a parking zone, but the place itself isn’t proper. I’m sure many will
be disappointed. They should soon build parking spaces like the one in Patto,
but even then it makes no sense because people will have to walk far distances.
I hope they study the structure of the city first to implement plans like
these.

In Panjim, no parking
or double parking seems to be the major
issue, causing problems for other commuters and pedestrians as well. However,
recently, at the Assembly, a discussion on having pay parking for the city was
taken into consideration. According to reports, it was decided to have pay
parking for on a trial basis on Atmaram Borkar road and 18th June road of
Panjim. Pay parking would be only applicable to four-wheelers. The initiative
has been taken in order to decongest the city and make it easier for people to
travel. But are the people of Goa happy? Will they adjust to maintain the
city’s major trouble? Or are they simply unhappy about paying?

There are advantages
as well as disadvantages to this scheme. Through pay parking, we can park in
different parking zones without having to wait for a long time. There are also
a lot of tourists taxis here, so those who hire them can stop and explore by
paying for the place they have parked. This will bring in more tourists. The
third advantage is that parking will be organised, and I’m sure many agree with
this. But, before pay parking starts a lot needs to be done like roads,
infrastructure, the parking lanes are so narrow that big four-wheeler’s hardly
fit properly. Pay parking is the ideal solution in this situation.

The price for a
two-hour pay parking is Rs 25, which is quite reasonable I feel, because
otherwise for people like us traveling in Panjim often it’s so difficult to
find a parking place. There are people parking for hours and just loitering
around which doesn’t give a chance for other vehicles. And then in frustration
people end up parking anywhere, anyhow. I sometimes take four rounds around 18
June Road just to find a place to park. Pay Parking is absolutely a good
solution, they should do it. At least then window shopping might stop and
people who need to be there get to park.

The basic need
of the hour is to streamline this entire traffic movement. There is haphazard
parking everywhere. The major parking slots are already blocked the time you
enter that area, and vehicles are parked for a long time. So, with the system
of pay parking at least the situation people will know they have to pay and
hence parking will be controlled.
It is not that
our Panjim is short of parking space, the management needs to be improved.
Anyways we are paying so much for fuel while we go round in circles; instead of
that why not just enroll in pay parking, and save the larger amount. Currently,
they will be doing it on a trial basis so let’s see how it works. If we don’t
try how will we know?
