Of late, Facebook has been receiving flak from users across the
world, who said that they’re feeling violated about Facebook’s policies that
handle user data and how that data is shared with third-party developers. The
co-founder of WhatsApp, Brian Acton, is the latest popular figure to join the
thousands of other people worldwide who made the hashtag #DeleteFacebook trend
on Twitter. Acton took to Twitter to express his anguish over the matter and in
a straightforward fashion, tweeted: “It is time. #deleteFacebook.” This created
a whirlwind of a buzz on social media.
It is important to note that Acton’s tweet
is significant because Acton has worked with Facebook very closely, before he
parted ways with the social media giant earlier this year. Acton was
instrumental in selling WhatsApp to Facebook in 2014 for $19 billion, and
continued to be associated with Facebook after the sale, heading the Whatsapp
division inside Facebook. After quitting Facebook, Acton has been working with
Signal – a messaging app best known for its encrypted, highly secure messaging.
