Three
passionate artists came together to showcase their artwork in the exhibition entitled ‘heArt and Soul’.
Organised at Kala Academy Goa, Panjim, the three-day exhibition, comprising the
works of medical practitioner Dr Sunil Kakodkar, engineer Suyash Tanawade and
professional photographer Aslesh Kamat, was inaugurated earlier this month by
Nilesh Cabral, MLA of Curchorem and Chairman of GTDC.
Each of the three possesses a different approach to art. Dr
Sunil is partial to watercolour and natural subjects, Suyash uses many mediums
including acrylic and watercolour, pen-work, mandala and mural art and Aslesh
is a photographer, with an inclination toward photographing people in candid
moments. Yet, they are all united by one fundamental similarity, as Dr Sunil
describes it – a passion for art held since childhood, and a talent honed into
a skill over the years.
The unison of the three artists in this exhibition was
“accidental”, according to Dr Sunil. Though neither he nor Suyash paints
professionally, they wanted to show off the portfolios they’d developed over
quite a while, and allow people outside of their immediate circles to enjoy it.
Aslesh, Dr Sunil’s nephew, with several photographs in his repertoire, joined
them to form the trio.

Dr Sunil mentions that he grew interested in painting with
watercolours as a child. Though he chose the medical profession, he never gave
up on his passion, and continued to paint and develop his talent over the
years. “Watercolours have fascinated me because of their transparency and
fluidity,” he says. Inspired largely by nature, his creations portray everyday
scenes from parts of Goa encountered in his daily life, as well as photographs
of beautiful locales captured by his daughter.
Suyash also admits to being fascinated by art as a child.
Beginning with monochrome pencil sketches, he was soon drawn to “the charm of
colours in human life” as he calls them, and began to play with many mediums,
all self-taught. He is not limited to a single subject, painting whatever he likes,
from the image of Buddha to landscapes, either using bright colours, or using
mediums like pen-work. He aims to turn himself from an artist-by-passion to an
artist-by-profession soon.
Aslesh, also a self-taught artist, took up photography in high
school. The hobby turned into a passion, and finally, a profession. Having
developed his skills individually, he mastered the basics at the School of
Visual Arts, Goa. Today, in addition to teaching at his alma mater, he covers
weddings, fashion and commercial events, and shoots for advertisements. He
specialises in candid photography – capturing people in un-posed moments and
creating innovative pictures. “Making visual dreams come true is what I believe
in,” he says. The photographs showcased at the exhibition captured people in
traditional celebrations.
So,
what’s the story behind the interesting name? “Creating art is in our hearts,
it is our passion. For us, it is just a soulful thing to do. We are not
professionals. That is why we have kept the title heArt and Soul,” Dr Sunil
