Giving an artistic touch to Janmashtami celebrations

Every year on the occasion of Janmashtami, the students of Goa College of Art, Altinho, Panjim follow the annual tradition of celebrating the day with enactments and art competitions. Hundreds of students, ex-students and other youngsters did the same this year as they got together at the college for a grand celebration. Four pairs, representing each of the four years of college, dress as Krishna and Radha while many also participated in the off stage competitions finally concluding with the breaking of the dahi handi.

In pot painting competition, the first prize was won by the first year students, second prize by the second year students and third prize for the fourth year students. In the Mehndi competition, the first prize was won by Tanvi of second year, second prize was won by Aradhana of third year and the third prize was awarded to Soujanya of first year. For the poster competition, the first prize was won by the third year students, second prize by the fourth year students and third prize was awarded to the first year students.

In Rangoli competition, the first place was won by third year students, second place was won by first year and the third place by won by the second year students. In the entry performance, the first place was won by second year students, second place was won by fourth year students and third place was won by third year students.

Amisha Harmalkar, a third year class representative and a student of printmaking informs, “This celebration gives us an opportunity to be creative and show our talent in art, costume making, music, choreography and all the students of the class can participate in the competitions and performance. Two students from the entire year are selected as Radha and Krishna. Anyone who is able to climb the human pyramid can break the dahi handi for that class with the help of his fellow batchmates who form the pyramids. Instead of just one, we have four dahi handis put up for each class. For the entry performance, the class is judged on costume, storytelling, dance and music.”
