Gauri and Nainika Karan are fashion designers who have gained fame for their eclectic
mélange of stylish designs through their label Gauri and Nainika, making their
mark in Bollywood as well as Hollywood. At the recently held Blenders Pride
Magical Nights, the designers chose the colour theme ‘black’ to portray strong
and confident women in today’s world. Adding to the glamour that gripped the
event was showstopper Nushrat Bharucha, who has starred in films such as ‘Pyaar
Ka Punchnama’ and ‘Sonu Ke Titu Ki Sweety’, as she walked the ramp with her
sparkling charisma and charmed everyone in a beautiful piece of the Gauri and
Nainika ensemble.
Gauri and Nainika started their brand in
2002 with the intention of creating a label that would focus on bespoke and
cocktail dresses, as well as evening gowns. The designs were progressive and
futuristic for the Indian market when they began. Nainika admits, “In
retrospect, it seemed like a scary idea for most of us to venture into;
however, we did not let any hindrances stop us. People prefer luxury couture
labels if they are investing that kind of money.” While the designers may have
started with a struggle, their strong belief has helped them carve a niche for
their label in the industry. Today, they are nothing but proud of where it has
landed them.

It is the first time that Gauri and
Nainika have presented their selective collections for Blenders Pride Magical
Nights fashion show in Goa. The collections included waves of flirty ruffles in
tulle and weightless silk organzas in midi dresses. There were pieces of fluid
gowns cutting through the length of the silhouettes. Embellished with details
such as gigantic hand embroidered flowers and trailing bows, the collection
created a vibrant and stylish evening.
The entire collection evoked a deep sense
of romanticism in a stronger and bolder shape, colour, texture and shine.
“We take great pride in narrating what has
made us what we are today,” expresses Nainika. “We have taken Nushrat Bharucha
as our showstopper; I mean it is just wonderful to have such a confident woman
walking the ramp with our designs,” she adds.
Speaking to the showstopper, Nushrat
Bharucha contemplates the deep connection that she shares with Gauri and
Nainika after walking her first red carpet in their designs and also receiving
her first award. The experience truly made her a confident woman. According to
her, Gauri and Nainika’s designs are expressive and light. “From what I see,
they understand women really well, and it is the cut that defines you,”, shares
Nushrat. Coming from a Muslim background, Nushrat takes immense pride in
pushing herself beyond the traditional boundaries, and takes pleasure in
playing the roles that have been offered, which have helped her build her style
and charisma today.
Nushrat delights in her family’s supportive motivation,
especially her grandmother’s. “My struggle is similar to any other normal girl.
Being Muslim is not a problem apart from the fact that in Bohra Muslims we have
to get married really early and I chose a field where I’m not supposed to get
married early.” Like every family, her family fears her failure and rejoices in
her achievements.
