KEEPING THE LITTLE ONES SAFE IS NOT CHILD’S PLAY

In keeping with the recent tragic incident involving Hema Malini’s car crash in Rajasthan, which claimed the life of a four year old girl, Café speaks to a few parents across Goa, asking how it is that they ensure their children’s safety

Protecting the lives of their little ones is
perhaps the most primal of instincts for a parent.
This is evenly distributed across the board in all of
life’s spheres, whether it concerns ensuring this
safety at home, while the child is at school and
especially when on the road. Parents need to be
ever-vigilant
Stun for the road
In an unfortunate turn of events, last week, a
young girl travelling along with her family died
in a car crash that involved a collision with the
vehicle of actress turned BJP MP, Hema Malini.
The Bollywood celebrity, while mourning the loss
of the child went on to tweet “My heart goes out
to the child who unnecessarily lost her life and
the family members who have been injured in the
accident. How I wish the girl’s father had followed
the traffic rules – thn this accident could have
been averted & the lil one’s life safe!”
Bearing this in mind, Goan parents share
their practices when it comes to keeping their
children out of harm’s way when in transit. One
such parent is Meena Kamat,
a mother from Ribandar, who
says, “First and foremost, it is
very important to secure the
child to the rear seat, with the
use of seat belts. Most of the
time, even we as adults tend
to neglect the importance of
seat belts and it is only when we have a child
that we need to take care of that we tend to take
the safety precautions more seriously. Also, one
can make use of ‘Baby on Board’ stickers that
can be pasted on the back of the car to make
other drivers aware of the presence of a child in
the car.”
Adding to this is Rina Barretto from Panjim,
who says, “I have, quite frankly, never used a
dedicated baby car seat. However, I have raised
two children and had no mishaps. Ensuring that
the child is securely fastened is paramount to its
safety. Once that has been ascertained, there is
lesser cause for worry.
