LOKOTSAV – GOA’S FAVOURITE FOLK FESTIVAL

Around 500 Folk artistes will be presenting various folk dances and music of their states and also 600 craft persons are displaying their handicraft items during the festival period

A beautiful
mixture of folk forms and handicrafts
from all over India is currently on display at the yearly folk
festival ‘Lokotsav-2018’ that’s being held at Darya Sangam, Kala Academy in
Panjim.

This is 19th year of Lokotsav in Goa and day by day its
popularity is increasing rapidly.

Organised by the of Art and Culture, Government of
Goa, folk artistesand craftsman from Rajasthan, Gujarat, Assam, Manipur,
Haryana, West Bengal, Uttarakhand, Chhattisgarh, Maharashtra, Karnataka, Uttar
Pradesh, Bihar, Odisha, Madhya Pradesh, Sikkim, Tripura including Goa are
presenting the folklore of their respective states in Lokotsav-2018.

That’s
around 500 Folk artistes who are showcasing various folk dances and music of
their states and also 600 craft persons showcasing their handicraft items
during the festival period. “Dhol, Dholak, Khadtaal, Khanjari, Majira, Taasha,
Masindo, Mughkhan, Shankh, Basuri, Ranashing, Pung, Dhol Cholam, Gogona, Thali,
Nagara, Pepa, Kamaicha, Murali, Samel, Ghumat, Mhadale, Zaanj, Chipali,
Kansale, Peti, Table etc are the traditional musical items that have added to
the beauty and grace of the Lokostav festival,” said Pradeep Naik of the
Directorate of Art and Culture.

“The performances of all these
artistes mesmerie the audience. It also depicts the unity of our diverse
cultures,” added Naik. The folk related programmes are performed everyday for
continuous 3 hours from 6.30 pm to 9.30 pm. The Goan folk dances like Ganesh
Vandana, Fugadi, Dhalo, Goff, Tonyamel, Samai Nritya, Ghodemodni, Dekhni,
Virbhadra, Kunbi dance, Mando, Dulpad, Kagor, Mourlo, Corridinho , Dandla Khel,
Talgadi, Horbala, and Gaj (Dhangar dance) are performed on a specially designed
splendid stage. In addition to folk dances, there have been Western musical
programmes of traditional plays by school students , ‘let cha’ and ‘baul ‘
dance etc are being performed.

Besides Goa and various other states
from India, the folk artistes and handicraft artisans from countries like Sri
Lanka, Vietnam , Germany have added colours to this fest. The ‘Bahrupiya
artistes attract the audience with their eye- catching costumes which they
flaunt every day. The live acts performed by the ‘Kathputali’ artistes also
touch the hearts of the audience.

The tourists
visiting the Lokotsavl festivals along with locals have been seen swarming the
numerous stalls at the festival. Crochet work, bags made up of cloth, jute etc,
embroidery work , clothes and wooden toys, traditional and artistesic furniture
, sofa and pillow covers, different types of footwear, ayurvedic medicine and
beauty products, different types of sarees, readymade clothes , bandhani, kota
clothes, imitation jewellery, bangles, woolen products, decorative coconuts,
Patta portraits of Orisssa among others are on display.
