From keychains and floral bouquets to decorative items, many youngsters are turning these simple pipe cleaners into creative crafts. What was once used intended for removing moisture and residue from smoking pipes has now become a part of modern handmade art and creativity. When you hear the term pipe cleaner art, the name may sound unusual for a craft. Originally, these fuzzy wire pipe cleaners were invented to clean smoking or tobacco pipes because their flexible wire structure and soft fibres. It could remove dust and ash from narrow spaces. Over time, people discovered that pipe cleaners could be bent, twisted and shaped into creative designs and decorative crafts. As the craft became popular in today’s DIY culture, pipe cleaners also began to be known as “chenille stems,” a name that helped the craft gain wider attention.

These crafts have also become a stress relieving activity, as many people use this art form to stay relaxed and spend less time on screens. From their original purpose of cleaning pipes to becoming handmade and personalized gifts, chenille stem or pipe cleaner crafts have now grown into a popular trend and transformed into a modern form of artistic creativity among people. One of the main reasons behind this growing trend is that these handmade crafts are created with love, patience and creativity in today’s highly digital world, where many people no longer prefer making handmade items because they are time-consuming and require commitment. Many youngsters now prefer giving handmade flowers and gifts instead of market products because they feel more personal. Chenille stem crafting does not require expensive materials or professional skills and can be easily made at home with dedication and creativity.
Mayem, Bicholim resident Kirti Chari, 26, says she started making pipe cleaner crafts after watching tutorials on social media. “I got inspired through Instagram and other videos about pipe cleaner crafts. From those ideas, I started making flowers and forming bouquets using my own creativity and designs,” she says. According to Kirti, pipe cleaner art is becoming popular because “people are attracted to something new and creative.” She adds that flower bouquets are among the most demanded craft items and says social media platforms have greatly influenced the trend. “Mostly young people buy these handmade and aesthetic crafts,” she says. Talking about the crafting process, Kirti explains, “If you take a simple flower like a lily, it usually takes around 15 to 20 minutes to make one.” Speaking about the challenges, she says, “Some customers send reference images of how they want the bouquet, which flowers they prefer and what extra items they want added, so customized orders can sometimes become difficult and time consuming to create.”
Valpoi resident Zunaira Aga, 19, says pipe cleaners are used to make “Flowers, animals, and miniature decorations,” while teachers also use them for “shape learning and science models.” She mentions, “Today, they are mainly used in creative activities by children, artists, and hobbyists. She says pipe cleaners are popular for handmade gifts and bouquets because they are “easy to bend, lightweight, affordable, reusable and available in many colours.” Different types such as “standard, glitter, jumbo, neon, metallic and patterned pipe cleaners” are available today. She further explains that most modern pipe cleaners are made from synthetic fibres and metal wire, making them “not fully biodegradable,” although eco-friendly alternatives are slowly becoming popular.
The popularity of chenille stem crafts has rapidly increased among youngsters through platforms such as Pinterest and Instagram. Sanquelim resident Arya Desai, 20, says she started making pipe cleaner crafts around two to three months ago. “The inspiration comes from my mother, while YouTube videos motivate me to experiment with different craft ideas. I started exploring more designs which catch my attention and slowly develop a love for it,” she says. Arya’s hobby gradually turned into a small business, and begins selling handmade items at college exhibitions, stalls and programmes held at Ravindra Bhavan. “I never imagined that my hobby would become a source of income,” she says. According to Arya, flower bouquets require more effort than keychains, while evil eye keychains remain among the most preferred items. “These crafts are attractive, long lasting and cute with a kawaii aesthetic that appeals to many youngsters today,” she says. She adds that making chenille stem crafts helps reduce stress. “It is absolutely enjoyable because you enjoy what you are making and there are efforts behind it,” she says, while also mentioning that these crafts should become more eco-friendly in the future.
Kudchirem resident Nidhi Sawant, 21, says chenille stem art has become trendy because it is affordable, handmade and attractive to both youngsters and adults. “Pipe cleaners are simple to use, colorful, and can be turned into flowers, decor, gifts, keychains and many other cute designs,” she says. “Customers mostly prefer colorful flowers, personalized bouquets, keychains and aesthetic gift items because they feel unique and meaningful. Many people also purchase handmade flower bouquets for marriage signatures,” she adds. According to Nidhi, social media plays a major role in increasing the popularity of pipe cleaner crafts. “Instagram reels and posts help people discover new bouquet trends and customized gifts,” she explains. “Most buyers are youths, couples and gift shoppers looking for handmade items for birthdays, marriages and special occasions. For me, it is a growing business,” she says. Nidhi says that customer preferences inspire her designs, although customized and detailed bouquets require patience and time to create.
