The crafty side of art

The works of local artists and crafters will be on showcased at Craft Works – An Artisanal Bazaar in Panjim over the weekend

Craft Works – an artisanal bazaar is a craft fair that is taking place at Menezes Braganza Hall,
Panjim today and tomorrow, i.e. November 17 and 18, 2018, form 11am to 8pm. The
fair is showcasing the hand-crafted works of 20 individuals artists, all women.
The event offers the public an ideal opportunity to support local artisans as
well as own some inspiring handicrafts. The fair is being organised by Aira
Mirchandani and Monica Dalvi, two women from diverse fields that share a common
passion for art.

The items on display and sale include handmade bags, candles,
jewellery, toys, baskets, crochet items and much more. Handicrafts have always
possessed a special appeal, despite the demand and convenience of mass-produced
items and the organisers feel that it’s time to remind the public of this.
“When an artist creates, what emerges is a unique item that is exclusive. An artist
puts her heart in whatever she creates, resulting in an item that stands out in
its uniqueness,” say the organisers.

Crochet features prominently at the fair. The needlework has
been an integral part of Goan art and craft and has evolved over time, from
being used in a traditional manner to create clothing, tablecloths, cushion
covers, coasters, etc to trendier items such as jewellery, decorations and much
more. One of the artists, Angela Machado, 78, is presenting crochet doilies and
other products at the bazaar.

Another art form that is being featured is called decoupage,
which uses paper cut-outs on wood, glass and metal surfaces in a laborious yet
beautiful manner. A couple of artists have a wide range of beautifully crafted
products such as lampshades, coasters, etc.

With the ban on plastic, cloth bags are getting back in fashion
and it’s a great time to get innovative with cloth bags. Several different
artisans have various kinds of bags to match your requirement, such as upcycled
bags made from denim, which are chic and trendy.

There’s a lot for kids as well, with cute toys that are not only
unique but also safe and non-toxic. Made from fabric, these toys are washable,
an essential requirement for baby toys.Exclusive baby clothes and little girl
dresses are also being featured at the fair, with creative designs and unique
patterns on display.

Organic and eco-friendlyskin care products, handmade by the
artisans, are also a part of this craft fair.

Hand-crafted
jewellery, made using different materials and in different patterns and sizes
are also available. Other trinkets such as key chains, fridge magnets and diary
covers made with cold ceramics are also things to watch out for. With the
holiday season just around the bend, this fair is a great place to find unique
gifting options for loved ones.
