Understanding autoimmune disorders in women, risks and warnings

Autoimmune diseases disproportionately affect women, often remaining undetected until they significantly impact daily life

A research study by Stanford University Medicine, and another study by the Indian Rheumatology Association, have asserted that women are the worst affected by autoimmune disorders. When the body’s immune system, which normally fights germs, mistakenly attacks its own healthy cells, tissues, and organs, causing inflammation and damage, it is called an autoimmune disorder. There are over 80 types, including Rheumatoid Arthritis, Lupus, and Type 1 Diabetes, often causing chronic fatigue, pain, swelling, and affecting various parts of the body, with symptoms that can flare up and go into remission

The higher prevalence of autoimmune diseases in women is due to a complex interplay of genetic factors, specifically the X chromosome, sex hormones like estrogen and testosterone, and environmental triggers. A recent study from Stanford University uncovered new biological insights, showing that women’s bodies produce a molecule known as Xist RNA that helps control one of their two X chromosomes. However, this same molecule can occasionally disrupt the immune system, causing it to mistakenly attack healthy cells, which may help explain why women are more prone to certain conditions. Because women carry two X chromosomes (XX) while men have only one (XY), women have a greater number of X-linked immune-activating signals. To test this idea, researchers also examined men with Klinefelter syndrome, a condition in which males have an extra X chromosome (XXY). They discovered that these men develop lupus at rates similar to women, further highlighting the important role genetics plays in autoimmune diseases. Hormonal influences are another important contributor to the development of autoimmune disorders. During adolescence, sudden shifts in hormone levels can initiate the first signs of an autoimmune condition. In the period of carrying a child and the weeks following birth, many women with rheumatoid arthritis experience symptom relief while expecting, yet conditions such as lupus or rheumatoid arthritis commonly flare up again about six weeks after childbirth. Later in life, significant changes in hormone balance can awaken previously inactive autoimmune responses. Inherited biological traits, hormone fluctuations throughout the reproductive years and after giving birth, along with factors such as psychological stress, excess body weight, and poor nutrient intake, can further increase women’s susceptibility to autoimmune diseases.

SYMPTOMS TO LOOK OUT FOR!

Autoimmune disorders may arise at any stage of life, but they most often appear in women between the ages of 20 and 50. Rheumatoid arthritis is among the most prevalent of these conditions, leading to joint discomfort, stiffness, and in some cases, lasting joint damage. Lupus occurs less frequently but can affect women by involving multiple organs and causing symptoms such as extreme tiredness and joint pain. Sjögren’s syndrome is another autoimmune condition, particularly common among women of Swedish and European ancestry, and is mainly characterised by chronic dryness of the eyes and mouth. Because the signs of autoimmune diseases often resemble those of other illnesses, identifying them can be difficult. Common warning signs include long-lasting joint pain or stiffness, unexplained and ongoing fatigue, recurring skin rashes, and persistent dryness of the eyes or mouth that does not improve, among other symptoms. Autoimmune disorders often result in what are known as “invisible” disabilities, as they may not present with clear or outward physical symptoms. When these conditions are identified late, effective treatment becomes much more challenging. Doctors note that the situation is particularly concerning in India, where many women tend to overlook early warning signs such as fatigue, joint stiffness, or swelling, frequently attributing them to everyday stress, minor ailments, or the natural effects of ageing. Family obligations, limited awareness, and social factors often lead to delays in seeking medical care, allowing the illness to progress quietly until it reaches a more advanced stage. Detecting these conditions early is crucial in preventing lasting disability

REDUCING THE RISK OF AUTOIMMUNE DISEASES

Reducing exposure to harmful substances is an important preventive step. This includes staying away from smoking as well as environmental hazards such as air pollution, aggressive chemicals, and toxic household cleaners. Limiting the intake of highly processed foods that contain additives linked to immune reactions is also advisable, as ongoing stress can further increase vulnerability.

To lower overall risk, it is beneficial to stay physically active, ensure sufficient rest, and maintain a balanced body weight. Incorporating stress-management practices and choosing whole, minimally processed foods can support overall health.
