Herald Café: This was the
second time that you guys played here in Goa. What was the experience like?
Dimitri Vegas Like Mike:
It was crazy. The crowd was very big and energetic. It was a very nice
experience.
HC: What is the story
behind the etymology, ‘Dimitri Vegas Like Mike’?
DVLM: It is something that
we came up with a few years ago. (Michael adds) ‘Dimitri Vegas’ sounds pretty
international and I was sure that this thing was going to be a worldwide hype.
Coming from Belgium, it is not very common to have that kind of a name. It is
kind of funny that Vegas turned out to be one of the centres for EDM to blow
up. About ‘Like Mike’ I like the microphone, I like Michael Jordan. All in all,
‘Dimitri Vegas Like Mike’ sounded good together.
HC: According to you,
where is the EDM scene headed to?
DVLM: We think it will
keep growing for a couple of years more. But of course, it will evolve into
different things, just like everything keeps evolving on this planet. We have
been making different kinds of music. What we do for albums is a whole lot of
different stuff, all leaning in to the genre of EDM.
HC: You guys have been
making the anthems of Tomorrowland since 2010. Why did you choose to name the
anthem that you made for the latest edition of the festival after the
Chattahoochee River?
DVLM: We thought that it
has a native American feel to it. The vocals are from an older retro track from
Belgium that we used to listen to as kids.
HC: Hypothetically, if you
are approached by the makers of Sunburn for an anthem, what factors will go
into making it?
DVLM: We are already short
on time to make all the anthems of Tomorrowland, TomorrowWorld and the new
edition of Tomorrowland. It will be a very difficult situation for us to add
yet another anthem. We are sure there are a lot of other festivals also that
would like to have an anthem from us.
HC: What’s in store for
2015? Can you also share details about your collaboration with Major Lazer?
DVLM: We have been working
on the collaboration with Major Lazer for the past year and a half. We are
still working out the vocal parts and we are still figuring out whose voice to
use. We can’t really say a lot about what is going to be on the album, but the
album is coming out as well as the world tour which we started in Antwerp. The
next one is going to be in Mexico and who knows? Maybe the next one in India.
Let’s see.
HC: Apart from cooking
lamb and tandoori, what else are you taking along with you from India?
DLVM: A lot of smiles, for
sure. Everyone is so friendly here, that it is incredible. Incredible India.
