February 4, 2017, is a day that could mark a lot of
political change in Goa, as the people of the state will gear up to vote for
their representative of choice to form the new state government. The youth, in
more recent times, have been becoming increasingly more vocal, with regard to
their choice of elected officials.
One enthusiastic opinion came from Milind Satardekar, a
resident of Dona Paula, who asked for his named to be changed as his views are
political in nature. “We need dynamism at the fore. We need our leaders to be
young and energetic. I would love to see someone in the Justin Trudeau mould.
Somebody who appoints people to portfolios that they understand. Not just old
timers who are past it. It is time for a change,” he says.

The growing trend of voicing such approval or dissent on
social media is one such trend that allows the identification of said youth
mobilisation.
In light of this, Café asks a few members of a young Goa, what it is
that they seek in an ideal leader; how educated this person should be; what
qualities they believe he/she should possess:
I think I would like to see someone more spontaneous and
energetic. Modi does fit this description pretty well. I hope the local MLAs
get a lot more active in their constituencies in the next term. From what I’ve
heard about his style, Justin Trudeau is an awesome example.

An ideal leader is someone who understands the needs of the citizens and then looks at the outcome of the nation/state. In this scenario, I think that age doesn’t really matter, as long they think like the public and not like leaders. I believe that they should be qualified, to at least a BE/BA/BSC level, so that by then they’re experienced enough to deal with certain situations at hand, making sure money doesn’t fix all situations. He/she should be understanding, down to earth where caste doesn’t matter, putting the needs of the people first, and not just looking at the monetary aspect of things.

My ideal leader would be someone who has a young attitude; is easily approachable on social media, having a good understanding of the needs of the constituency. He/she should have the ability to influence the government in power. Though formal educational degrees cannot define the ability of the candidate, education from a renowned institution would add to her/his skills.
