A good world can emerge only if there are enough people strong enough to challenge it and people who develop a vision of what is genuinely good. Our efforts should be to create and challenge the apathy towards life especially of people who are looked down upon by the so called superior people or the self justified
It is wonderful to say, people like you Sujit De, who respond to this type of problems, remind us that there are still good people in the world. As people of good will we know that through opportunities we use well like “the pen is mightier than the sword”. God recreates the world and the lives of people. In their dark times, that they are not alone, but have good people as their friends and confidants .Through your endeavour you make the rag pickers feel worthy when society has judged them sometimes as dirty people, when they are as you say and I believe are doing a great service to the world’s environment
There are a dozen ways to deal with the garbage around and several ways to conquer it. Ever wondered where your garbage goes? Not that you care but ask one of the rag pickers in modern day India and she, he will be able to tell you every nook and corner where the trash is accumulated . For them, it is their work place.
It is not about whether the world is good or not, whether we live in an ethical and moral world or not, but it is about whether you want to be part of taking responsibility to all that contributes to dangers of the environment and the health of the public
You will find them almost everywhere scavenging the garbage cans and the garbage dumping grounds. No, it is not food that they are after, though if they find a half eaten apple or two, it would well be a bonus for them. And it is not just rags that they are after. But they are on a constant look out for plastic, clothes, metal pieces, boxes and a host of other things that you and I throw away nonchalantly every day. In the capital of Delhi there are more than one lakh rag pickers with most of them being children.
Listen to what they have to say “this is our life; we just have to work for money the whole day and look at all those people out there! Having all there luxuries and looks, while we have all our problems! I am not saying those people who work and then keep their styles or those who have a job as a rag picker.
Why doesn’t anyone help us??? We are all humans! Didn’t Human Rights just pass by? Why are we celebrating it? Even monkeys can celebrate it, but on that day, humans have to help each other!! It tells us that all humans have their rights.
Why?
Why does this have to happen to us? I am full of questions of Why’s. All the troubles we face. People just come and litter wherever they want. Why don’t people help us?
Answer: Because they think we are cheap.
God wants us to know that life is a series of beginnings so it is not too late. Just as graduations are not terminations, but commencements so, we hope the potential of these wonderful people, the so called rag pickers that is easily available will be used.
