Burying the Dead

I have attended many funerals in my life. At many a funeral I have felt why did this person have to die. At times, because they are survived by aged, ailing parents or by very small children. Sometimes because they are in the prime of their life, with so many aspirations in their minds and so many projects on hand. Most often we have to live with the loss of our loved one for the rest of our lives. The memories of them only bring back our heartaches. We know that the grave is one place our dear departed will never return from.
A few days ago I was attending the funeral of a young man just about 45 years old. What caused the death of this young man, who till we met recently, seemed to be enjoying good health, I still do not know. But I do know that he was very enthusiastic about doing many things, some of which were in the process of completion. I felt that this young life was snuffed out almost at its peak. His family members and his group of friends were shocked and shattered by his death.
I was also upset but a few thoughts crossed my mind, which I felt I should pen down. No doubt the family members and friends knew that they had to bear their own grief not only then but always. At the same time, the large crowd attending the funeral gave them the comfort and solace of knowing that so many people had come to share their grief and make light their sorrow.  It was our way of telling them that we too had come to pray for their beloved one and to mourn with them their loss. Burying the dead is one of the corporal works of mercy for the Christians but it has a social significance for all people, irrespective of the religion they profess.
It is also an occasion to remember and make known the various facets of the departed person’s life. It is a time to remember that he did so much good not only to his immediate family but also in the place where he worked and for the community in which he lived.
It is also a good opportunity to thank all those who were a part of his life. Many people could have been involved in his various activities and projects. Many will have supported him in the difficult times that he faced in his life. Others may have cared for him and nursed him in his illness at home and in the hospital. To these and to all those who attended the funeral or helped with it in any way, this is a great time to offer thanks.
